The earliest fossil evidence of human presence in India was provided by the discovery of the fossilized skull of Narmada Human, initially named Narmada Man. The skull fragment was found on the banks of the river Narmada at Hathnora village in Madhya Pradesh in December 1982 by geologist Arun Sonakia. The skull belongs to the category of Homo erectus, a species that preceded Homo sapiens, the modern human species. The skull is estimated to be around 500,000 years old and is the first and only of its kind in India.
