UPSC CSE Pre 2003
A. Only 1
B. Only 2
C. Both 1 and 2
D. Neither 1 nor 2
Answer: Both 1 and 2
Option c is the correct answer.
Statement 1 is correct: The Cholas fought several wars with the Pandyas and the Cheras and emerged victorious in most of them. They conquered the Pandya kingdom by capturing Madurai and annexed the Chera territories of Kerala and Malabar. They also subdued other regional powers, such as the Pallavas, the Gangas, the Rashtrakutas, the Hoysalas, and the Kakatiyas. The Cholas thus established their supremacy over peninsular India and became one of the most powerful and influential empires in Indian history.
Statement 2 is correct: Cholas were not only a dominant force in India, but also a maritime power that extended their influence on Southeast Asia. The Sailendra Empire was a Buddhist kingdom that ruled over Java, Sumatra, and other islands of Indonesia from the 8th to the 10th century CE. The Cholas came into conflict with the Sailendras over the control of the lucrative trade routes in the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. The Cholas launched a naval expedition against the Sailendras in 1025 CE, led by Rajendra Chola I. The Chola fleet attacked and plundered several ports and cities of the Sailendra Empire, such as Palembang, Kedah, Srivijaya, etc. The Cholas also captured some of the islands and territories of the Sailendras, such as Andaman, Nicobar, Malaya, etc.
